Should I go out tonight, where, and when?

Most aurora apps show you a Kp number and leave the rest to you. Aurora Atlas answers with a decision: the best spot within your drive tonight, and the hours to be there.

What it does

One question, answered: is tonight worth it, where should I go, and when?

A plan, not a chart

Every viewing spot gets a score from 0 to 100 for tonight from clear sky, aurora activity, darkness and the moon. You get one recommended place, the best three-hour window and a Navigate button.

Clouds, done properly

Cloud decides most aurora nights. Atlas reads low, mid and high cloud for every hour at every spot, because thin high cloud and thick low cloud are not the same night. It can tell you when a drive inland gets you under clear sky.

Local detail, destination by destination

Hand-picked viewing spots with drive times, parking, bus stops and winter notes, the same care first built for Tromsø, now at 35 destinations and more on the way. Anywhere else, the app scores the place you pick.

Made in Tromsø

41 spots around Tromsø, with cameras and road notices

Aurora Atlas started as Aurora Tromsø, built by a Tromsø local to answer the question visitors ask every evening. The Tromsø guide is the most detailed in the app: 41 named spots from Telegrafbukta in town to the Lyngen Alps, with drive times from where you stay, bus stops and parking, live sky and road cameras, and road notices on the map.

Destinations

A score for anywhere, spots where we know them

Pick a base and how far you will drive, and the app ranks the hand-picked spots within reach; pick any other place on Earth and it scores that place. Zoom out to the globe to see tonight's measured aurora oval (NOAA OVATION), or where on Earth it is dark right now.

Coming soon: 30 more destinations in Faroe Islands, Greenland, United Kingdom, Ireland, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

  • Which night to go out. The next nights rated, with the reason in plain words.
  • Written analysis on request. A short summary of the outlook, written from public forecast data, never from anything about you.
  • Eight languages. English, Norsk, Svenska, Suomi, Deutsch, Français, Español and 简体中文.

Your choices

Plan tonight your way.

  • Choose your base and range. Set where you are staying and how far you are willing to travel.
  • Location is optional. In the current version, it can help find a nearby destination or estimate drives. You can choose a place manually instead.
  • See current data details. The privacy policy explains how this version handles location, settings and forecast requests.

Already have Aurora Tromsø?

Aurora Atlas arrives as a free update

Version 2.0 replaces Aurora Tromsø Northern Lights on the same App Store listing. Your language and settings carry over. Scores come from an improved model, so the numbers may differ from what you are used to (why).

Aurora Atlas needs iOS 16.4 or later. On older iPhones, version 1.2.2 keeps working.
