Hov beach · Gimsøy

White-sand beach at the northern tip of flat, thinly populated Gimsøy, beside Hov farm and its campsite; the open sea to the north gives one of the lowest northern horizons in Lofoten.

Why it works for the aurora

View
North-west to north-east over the open sea, with only low skerries in the northern view; the hill Hoven rises behind you to the south-west..
Darkness
Mostly dark sky, grade 2 on a scale from 0 (darkest) to 5. Some light from a village, houses or a road nearby.
Aurora
Under the auroral oval: aurora can be overhead even on quiet nights.

Getting there

Distance
About 37 km by road from the middle of Lofoten (estimate), roughly 42 min by car.
Parking
Paid parking at Hov farm (pay at the machine or in the restaurant); another paid car park by the golf course.

68.3387, 14.1091 · Open in OpenStreetMap

Before you go

Stay on the beach and paths: the land around is farmland and horse pasture. In onshore storms big waves run far up the beach.

Dress for standing still in the cold, bring a head torch with a red light, and park only where parking is allowed. A forecast is guidance, not a promise: check the road and weather warnings for Norway before a night drive. See our winter safety note.
