Syväsenvaara tower
City-built wooden observation tower on Syväsenvaara hill between the centre and Santa Claus Village, a short uphill walk from the Santapark bus stop. Not dark, but one of the easier places to get above the trees without a car.

Why it works for the aurora
- View
- All round from a small tower on a 190 m hill, just above the trees; to the north the lit Sodankylä road, the airport and Santa Claus Village add glow low in the sky..
- Darkness
- Some light pollution, grade 3 on a scale from 0 (darkest) to 5. Glow from a nearby town; bright aurora is easy to see, faint aurora is washed out.
- Aurora
- Near the edge of the auroral oval: aurora on most active nights, low in the northern sky on quiet ones.

- Distance
- About 6 km by road from Rovaniemi (estimate), roughly 7 min by car.

Before you go
The paths are unlit and hard to follow in snow, and the tower stairs ice over: use a headlamp and hold the rail.
Dress for standing still in the cold, bring a head torch with a red light, and park only where parking is allowed. A forecast is guidance, not a promise: check the road and weather warnings for Finland before a night drive. See our winter safety note.
