Kätkätunturi top
Treeless top of Kätkä fell west of Levi, with a lean-to just below the summit. Visit Levi suggests the tops of Levi and Kätkä when low cloud sits at the tree line, because you may climb out above it. A real outing on foot, not a roadside stop.

Why it works for the aurora
- View
- All round from the open fell top (about 500 m); Levi fell and its lit slopes about 5 km to the east, dark forest and fells to the north and west..
- Darkness
- Dark sky, grade 1 on a scale from 0 (darkest) to 5. Little artificial light; a good place for faint aurora and the Milky Way.
- Aurora
- Under the auroral oval: aurora can be overhead even on quiet nights.
Getting there
- Distance
- About 6 km by road from Levi (estimate), roughly 6 min by car.
- Parking
- No road to the top: walk the groomed winter walking and fat-bike trails from Levi village, several kilometres each way.
- Coordinates
- 67.7823, 24.7225 · Open in OpenStreetMap
Before you go
A long walk in the dark and cold on an exposed fell: tell someone your plan and carry a headlamp and spare warm layers. Keep off groomed ski tracks.
Dress for standing still in the cold, bring a head torch with a red light, and park only where parking is allowed. A forecast is guidance, not a promise: check the road and weather warnings for Finland before a night drive. See our winter safety note.
